Proposed ideas as of 3/20 - God's light, beautiful and honest craftsmanship, calm

1.    Foyer  -  light and welcoming a.      Same floor as sanctuary – carpet and tile b.      Recessed ceiling light  2.       Sanctuary floor a.      First choice:  White Granite Luxury Vinyl Tile with 6mm audio absorption backing.  And carpet (or carpet runner)on the center aisle that picks up color from the window (red would be “aha”) -  Burgandy color carpet runners are available online.    b.      Second choice:  Carpet tile with colors that pick up the windows Notes:  ·        Suggest that same flooring be used throughout the 2 nd floor of the church ·        Linoleum is >90% natural, compostable;  looking for a quality marble linoleum.  Sound dampening layer would go under the linoleum ·        For audio (when Pav...

Stained Glass Window treatment

Image
Notes: our wood framing has darkened over the years our wood framing is too narrow for the size of the windows our wood framing is not the same size all the way around To lighten up the church, God's light: 1st choice: paint the framing the same color as the wall  2nd choice:  refinish the framing and replace side boards with a wider, beveled board Visiting other churches (online): stone cathedrals have no wood framing, so no distinction in color between the wall and the window, no distraction from the window to the frame.   Wood and plaster churches like ours have framing for structural support.  When the framing is painted the same as the wall then the emphasis is on the window and the look is more like a cathedral/stone church. EXAMPLES:  Wood and plaster churches with painted framing to blend with the wall and put emphasis on the window. 4 of these examples are from Coastal Living magazine, southern churches.  Click to enlarge. Flooring

Image
Brighten and lighten our sanctuary.   Our recommendations  for the main flooring and a strip of carpet down the middle aisle: Main flooring White marble Vinyl Luxury Tile by J&J flooring.  Click to enlarge.      Rayon carpet tiles that reflect some color in the windows Carpet on the middle aisle extending into the narthex:  Solid color, high quality material picking up a bright color from the windows like red, blue or green  NOTES: This flooring could be used from the narthex into the kitchen and fellowship hall.   That will give a calmness and easy transition.   Easy to clean. Easy to replace a tile if damaged.  Installers will have special tools to punch holes for bolting down the pews. Audio HoH cable will be placed under the tile (fabric or Vinyl).  The installers will put down a strip of tape, then the cable, then another strip of tape.  The tile will be laid after the HoH cable.   The flo...

Some ideas for the ramp up to the chancel area

Image
First consider: we want wheelchair/walker access to the chancel area a lift would be very expensive and metalic/mechanical in the sanctuary space a ramp would be easy to use (no operating) and probably more likely to be used as others might join the wheelchair user on their way up we want to have the chancel area be one level, the lower level could be used.   to be ADA compliant, a ramp must have a maximum slope of 1:12 (one foot of ramp length for every inch of rise), a minimum width of 26 inches and a level 5' by 5' landing at the top and bottom Consider a ramp from the front (click to open larger, clearer):

Presbyterian Outlook March 2025 knows what we are doing

Suppose Eve had simply said “Nah, I’m good,” instead of munching on a piece of shiny fruit. Suppose Mary, Martha’s sister, had chosen to act as a hostess instead of sitting and listening to the words of Jesus. What if Pharaoh’s daughter had let the basket float its way down the river? Suppose Mary Magdalene, holding her basket of anointing herbs, had simply backed away slowly from the open tomb rather than looking inside. The Bible encourages us to dream, to look beyond the mundane, to “Seek, and ye shall find.” It would be harder to imagine the kingdom on earth if we didn’t investigate practical ways to bring it about.

Furniture and Finishings

Furniture and Finishings Make a list of furnishings which survived the flood: Pews Lectern podium Pulpit Baptism font (Seilers)  and stand  Communion table and the altar -  please note:  “For Presbyterian Christians, the idea of an altar as the center and focal point of worship is not a part of liturgical tradition. Although at times the communion table in the front of the congregation is mistakenly referred to as an altar, worship in the Presbyterian tradition centers on the Word of God preached from the pulpit and the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper celebrated at the communion table. Presbyterian churches do not have altars.” Presbyterian Outlook, November, 2014  Choir chairs Display case form the back of the church? Table that was in the back of the church? Lectern that was in the entrance way? Piano  List of furnishings we may need: Audio equipment table, chairs, rack shelf Chairs Things we’d like to see gone The disco ball :-)
Ideas for Focus Groups This is a collection of many ideas that have been expressed since Helene. Decisions over these ideas have not been made. Each can be considered a suggestion. Two basic sentiments that have been repeated are honoring our past, and rebuilding for our future.   Sanctuary Chairs or pews or a combination Former library, could it be a space a parent could take a crying baby or active children? Handicap access to chancel area (this may involve a designer-architect, might a ramp be incorporated rather than a lift? TBD…) Curved edge and steps along  the raised chancel area, increasing approachability One level chancel/stage Update chancel area furniture Install technology for improving hearing for those with hearing loss Sound table/booth in the back of the sanctuary Improve chancel lighting and microphones Community events, i.e. hosting performing arts and contra dances Inviting space for solace and reflection outside regular worship service Paint the wal...

Vest's ideas

Accessibility for mobility challenged attendees getting into the church and also onto the chancel was the first thing they said Seating: a.        room to maneuver between rows and in aisles b.        flexibility in seating arrangement; Jim really likes the idea of being in a circle, but they acknowledge the difficulty of that.  Maybe half crescents? c.        stability of seating and racks for hymnals & Bibles, whether pews or chairs; maybe a mix of pews & chairs? d.        Nancy suggested having the pulpit on a lower level to make the pastor appear more accessible  They realize that not all suggestions can be incorporated, and that our concern is to make sure everyone feels that they've been heard.  Jim also had an interesting comment that I think is good for us to keep in mind as we go through this process.  I mentioned that there ...
